Do Counsellors need to be registered?
All practising members of BACP must join the Register or be working towards registration. To become a registered member, a therapist must either have passed a BACP-accredited training course or our own Certificate of Proficiency. All practising BACP members must be registered or working towards registration. See Registered membership. Accreditation is a quality standard for experienced practitioners, designed to recognise your capacity for independent, ethical and competent practice. Your course does not have to be BACP-accredited, but if it’s not you’ll need to take our Certificate of Proficiency before you can progress to become a registered member or be eligible for our accreditation scheme. Both counselors and therapists are trained in their area of specialty. They hold licenses or certifications as required by their state. To practice therapy, a psychotherapist must be licensed in the state they’re in. There are no set entry requirements to become a counsellor, however you need to be aware that while an introductory course in counselling may have no academic entry requirements and a degree course will.
What qualifications do I need to be a registered counsellor?
Registered Counsellors are trained in a B. Psych qualification and it is important to note that a B. Psych or its equivalent comprises both academic and professional training. After completion of 12th class in any subject, you can go for an undergraduate degree program. To become a counsellor in India, you need to pursue a counsellor degree (B.A./ B.Sc) in Psychology/ Clinical Psychology/ Counselling Psychology or any other similar subject. Professional counselors are required by law in every state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico to be licensed in order to legally practice as a professional counselor. Health-care care provider licensing is strictly state-based, so your psychology license only allows you to practice psychology in the state or territory that issued your license. When a patient comes into your office, you can provide psychological services even if the patient lives elsewhere. Most U.S. state laws allow psychologists licensed in the United States to offer services internationally, as long as a client’s country of residence does not require additional licensing or training.
How long does it take to become a registered counsellor?
Professional counsellor training lasts three to five years and can be obtained as a diploma or a degree. A minimum number of client hours obtained through a work placement is required for qualification. The training begins with an overview of counselling. After you pass the NCE and graduate, you have three years to complete and submit documentation of 3,000 hours of counseling work experience and 100 hours of direct counseling supervision completed over a minimum of 24 months. This will be the final step in completing your certification. In the U.S., professional counseling is a career path that typically requires a master’s degree and a legal credential such as certification, endorsement or licensure to practice within a given jurisdiction, according to the American Counseling Association. Requirements vary by state or territory. It is possible to complete a certificate in counselling via online learning, which is a flexible and cost effective option for those who are interested in moving in to this area of work. The diploma in counselling is the next stage and is viewed as one of the most essential qualifications in this industry. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. A master’s in school counseling from an accredited college or university. Specific supervised hours of experience counseling as mandated by your state. Passing marks on the National Counselor Examination, or similar licensure exam as required by your state. Therapy or counseling is provided by a range of professionals including family doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and trained counselors.
