Therapists have discussed with me the “deep drag” of burnout resulting from overscheduling, personal conflicts, health struggles, and compassion fatigue. Some have made it to the other side, by taking time off and creating a regimen for rejuvenation. Others have realized that this field is not for them any longer. Therapists are constantly processing communication. They do this all the time. Truthfully speaking, the average person can only process about 1.6 conversations efficiently. That means that therapy is more of a cognitive overload, which in turn, can also lead to mental exhaustion. Being a therapist can be depressing, for a variety of reasons. The constant struggle to develop trust, cultivate a relationship and set goals for your patients only to watch them struggle, even after months or years of therapy, can cause you to feel a little pessimistic after time. Burnout, a term first coined by Freudenberger (1975), has three components: Emotional exhaustion, Depersonalization (loss of ones empathy, caring, and compassion), and. A decreased sense of accomplishment. Research shows a generally high job satisfaction among the profession, but everyone can have bad days. Do therapists get better over time?

The second study provides initial evidence that therapists can improve when provided sufficient support, challenge, and consultation. Taken together, these studies suggest that therapists can improve over time. And, as with our clients, this improvement requires commitment and effort. A bond and trust are formed in therapy, yet the therapeutic relationship is a bit one-sided; while your therapist learns a great deal about you, he or she is less likely to engage in reciprocal sharing. This is different from a friendship, in which both parties mutually share who they are. Personally, I allow my clients to initiate hugs and only allow touch from clients who understand healthy boundaries and has shown a great deal of respect. It’s important therapists protect themselves from clients who may attempt to use touch to manipulate. Clients should also be wise. We walk a fine line of being on your side but making sure that you are grounded and can maintain proper boundaries. So yes, we as therapists do talk about our clients (clinically) and we do miss our clients because we have entered into this field because we remain hopeful for others.
