What qualifications should a CBT therapist have?
You’ll usually need an accredited postgraduate course in cognitive behavioural therapy and experience of working in mental health. To do a postgraduate course, you’ll usually need a degree in a health and social care subject like: mental health nursing. Entry requirements. The cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) training is open to people with a range of experience. You will normally need to have a degree to undertake the postgraduate diploma but you may also be able to access the training if you can demonstrate equivalent academic skills. To practise as a counsellor employers will require you to have undertaken professional training and you’ll need a counselling qualification at foundation degree/diploma level to join a professional body or to become accredited. Instead, you need to have a background in one of the listed ‘Core Professions’, which include Mental Health Nursing, Occupational Therapy and Social Work, amongst others. If you have one of these core professions, you already hold the basic entry requirement for further training to become an accredited CBT therapist. After completing class 12th in any subject, you can go for an undergraduate degree. To become a Counsellor in India, you can pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology/ Counselling Psychology/ Clinical Psychology or any other similar subject. You can become a qualified counsellor without gaining a university degree. But this does not mean you can start practising without first undertaking the correct training. In the UK, all counsellors must have a counselling qualification at either foundation degree OR diploma level.
Can I be a CBT therapist without accreditation?
