What qualifications do I need to be a CBT therapist?
You’ll usually need an accredited postgraduate course in cognitive behavioural therapy and experience of working in mental health. To do a postgraduate course, you’ll usually need a degree in a health and social care subject like: mental health nursing. For individuals aspiring to become a cognitive behavioral therapist, you must have a minimum of a master’s degree in mental health (or at the very least, a master’s degree in a mental health related field). The cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) training is open to people with a range of experience. You will normally need to have a degree to undertake the postgraduate diploma but you may also be able to access the training if you can demonstrate equivalent academic skills. Instead, you need to have a background in one of the listed ‘Core Professions’, which include Mental Health Nursing, Occupational Therapy and Social Work, amongst others. If you have one of these core professions, you already hold the basic entry requirement for further training to become an accredited CBT therapist.
How long does it take to become a CBT therapist?
Training courses are offered by a number of universities and training providers and course titles may vary. They typically consist of approximately 64 days of training distributed over an academic year, up to 12 months in duration. They typically consist of approximately 60 days of training over a 12-month academic year. During training, you will be employed by a local NHS commissioned service. Nowadays CBT certifications are being offered to people after attending as little as 4 hours of training. Some institutes will play smart by announcing a 1 month CBT certification program or CBT coach training program with 2 hours of training 2 times a week.
