What is your self-schema?
The term self-schema refers to the beliefs and thoughts people have about themselves in order to organize information about the self. Self-schemas are generalizations about the self that are abstracted from past experiences and acting in a present situation. Self-schema are categories of knowledge that reflect how we expect ourselves to think, feel, and act in particular settings or situations. Each of these beliefs includes our overall perceptions of ourselves (outgoing, shy, talkative), as well as our knowledge of past experiences in similar situations. A schema in psychology and other social sciences describes a mental concept. It provides information to an individual about what to expect from diverse experiences and circumstances. These schemas are developed and based on life experiences and provide a guide to one’s cognitive processes and behavior. These are centered around objects, the self, roles, and events. Schemas can be changed and reconstructed throughout a person’s life. The two processes for doing so are assimilation and accommodation. Schema is a physical representation of data which is present in the database management system. In simple words we can call a schema the structure of any database. It defines how the data was stored in a database and also shows the relationship among those data, but it does not show the data present in those tables. n. a cognitive framework comprising organized information and beliefs about the self that guides a person’s perception of the world, influencing what information draws the individual’s attention as well as how that information is evaluated and retained.
What is an example of self-schema?
A few examples of self-schemas are: exciting or dull; quiet or loud; healthy or sickly; athletic or nonathletic; lazy or active; and geek or jock. Comprehension of the text requires the ability to relate the textual material to one’ s own knowledge.
What are the three self-schema?

How are self-schemas formed?
Self-schemas are considered the cognitive residual of a person in interaction with the social environment (Cantor & Kihlstrom, 1987; Markus, 1977). Categorizations and evaluations of one’s physical and behavioral characteristics made both by the self and others are the means by which schemas are established. Schemas are developed based on information provided by life experiences and are then stored in memory. Our brains create and use schemas as a short cut to make future encounters with similar situations easier to navigate. The Five-Factor Self-Concept Questionnaire (AF5, García and Musitu, 2009) assesses five specific dimensions (i.e., academic, social, emotional, family, and physical). People use schemata (the plural of schema) to categorize objects and events based on common elements and characteristics and thus interpret and predict the world. New information is processed according to how it fits into these mental structures, or rules. Schemas (or schemata) are units of understanding that can be hierarchically categorized as well as webbed into complex relationships with one another. For example, think of a house. You probably get an immediate mental image of something out of a kid’s storybook: four windows, front door, suburban setting, chimney. As infants, we are born with certain innate schemas, such as crying and sucking. As we encounter things in our environment, we develop additional schemas, such as babbling, crawling, etc. Infants quickly develop a schema for their caretaker(s). Schemas are the building blocks for knowledge acquisition [1].
Who introduced self-schema?
The term self-schema was introduced in 1977 by Hazel Markus, who based self-schema theory on cognitive psychological theory and research on schemas (or schemata). Schema is a mental structure to help us understand how things work. It has to do with how we organize knowledge. As we take in new information, we connect it to other things we know, believe, or have experienced. And those connections form a sort of structure in the brain. While the term schema is broadly used, it is commonly referring to three different schema types—a conceptual database schema, a logical database schema, and a physical database schema. Schema theory can be classified into three types: linguistic schema, content schema, and formal schema. Linguistic schema refers to a student’s previous knowledge about phonics, grammar, and vocabulary.
What is a negative self-schema?

Negative self-schemas are unhealthy, degrading, and harmful versions of these self-beliefs. The beliefs can also create strong attraction to inappropriate partners and lead to dissatisfying careers. Schemas can influence what you pay attention to, how you interpret situations, or how you make sense of ambiguous situations. Once you have a schema, you unconsciously pay attention to information that confirms it and ignore or minimize information that contradicts it.
How do self-schemas impact self-concept?
The self-concept is a schema that contains knowledge about us. It is primarily made up of physical characteristics, group memberships, and traits. Because the self-concept is so complex, it has extraordinary influence on our thoughts, feelings, and behavior, and we can remember information that is related to it well. The self is made up of three main parts that, incorporated, allow for the self to maintain its function. The parts of the self include: Self-knowledge, interpersonal self, and the agent self. Personality traits, abilities, likes and dislikes, your belief system or moral code, and the things that motivate you — these all contribute to self-image or your unique identity as a person. In addition to holding self-schemas about our current selves, some experts have suggested that we also have self-schemas about our future selves. 3 These reflect how we think we will turn out in the coming years, which might include both positive and negative ideas about our future selves. These are the public self, the self-concept, the actual or behavioral self, and the ideal self. Finally, we discuss self-presentation in the context of how people control their own behavior, including analysis of how self-presentational processes can replace other causal processes. There are five basic dimensions of the self-physical, emotional, social, mental and spiritual which have been illustrated in a relational perspective in the following Figure 1.1.
What are the characteristics of schema?
A schema is an organized unit of knowledge for a subject or event. It is based on past experience and is accessed to guide current understanding or action. Characteristics: Schemas are dynamic – they develop and change based on new information and experiences and thereby support the notion of plasticity in development. A schema is a strongly held belief that a person has about himself or herself, about other people, or about the world in general, and the belief can be either positive or negative in nature. In all cases, the schema is accepted as being true, even if it’s negative and causes harm or difficulties in the person’s life. Most people tend to develop more than one schema. Experts have identified 18 distinct schemas, but they all fall into one of five categories or domains: Domain I, disconnection and rejection, includes schemas that make it difficult to develop healthy relationships. It has been said that the fundamental principle of schema theory assumes that written text does not carry meaning by itself and that it can only provide direction for learners as to how they should retrieve or construct meaning from their own previously acquired knowledge. The primary benefit of Schema Therapy is its ability to 1) help people identify and adjust their negative patterns of behaviour and 2) learn how to ensure their emotional needs are met, in a healthy way. There are four elements to the Schema Therapy model: emotional needs, schemas, coping styles and modes.
