What Is Reframe In Counseling?

“Reframing” is a technique used in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to recognize automatic thoughts and swap them out for more sensible ones. People can use reframing as a technique to help them change their perspective, either on their own or in therapy. Thoughts that are more positive tend to be the focus of this process, but it can also be centered on lowering unrealistically high expectations. Reframing is a powerful skill to possess because it can cause immediate changes in our emotions regarding a situation and make us feel more clear-headed, resourceful, in control, and upbeat about our situation. Reframing includes 2 basic forms of frames – Content Reframing and Context Reframing. The main point of cognitive reframing is to find a more positive interpretation, view or experience of unexpected adverse events, concepts or even ideas that you dislike.

What Is Reframing And Example?

The concept of reframing is not new. It has been used in fairy tales and fables, and illustrates how behavior changes when the meaning, or frame, changes. For instance, in the story about The Ugly Duckling, we have a young chick who looks vastly different than the other duck chicks he is surrounded by. ‘… reframing is the process of changing the way a thought is presented so that it maintains its fundamental meaning but is more likely to support resolution efforts. ‘ Reframing is a therapeutic technique that assists individuals in broadening re- stricted perspectives. As a semantic aspect of interpretation, reframing provides alternative meaning to group member experiences and problems, which enhances the potential for constructive behavior change. Reframing is having the insight to interpret events in different ways — and to choose interpretations that lead to better outcomes. The truth is, we don’t act on what children do, we respond to the name we give it.
