Mixed media art involves mixing different creative mediums to create work that incorporates two or more art forms. For example, you can add sculpture to your painting, or draw on top of photography prints. Mixed media is all about breaking the boundaries between different art forms. Mixed media art techniques are media techniques that combine two or more mediums to make a work of art, with mediums being substances or material like oil paints, pastels, watercolors, or colored pencils. A mixed media painting is one that combines different painting and drawing materials and methods, rather than only one medium. Any materials can be used, including collage items such as pages from magazines, newspaper, photographs, fabric, soil, or packaging. A mixed media artist blends multiple genres of visual art to produce interesting combinations of images, materials, and textures. For example, your pieces could include photographs sewn with pieces of cloth, or plaster molded over chicken feathers that are stuck into a pincushion. Mixed media allows artists to push creative boundaries and give two-dimensional works interesting texture and unique 3D elements.
