If you are a graduate in a subject other than psychology, or you have a psychology degree that isn’t accredited by the society, you may be able to gain Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership by taking a society accredited conversion course. APA accreditation assures the public, licensing boards and potential employers that you have a sound educational and scientific foundation on which to build a successful career in psychology. The BPS and the HCPC have different but co-ordinated approaches to the accreditation of programmes. SETs are common to all educational programmes regulated by the HCPC, but the SOPs focus on areas specific to the profession. It is worth noting that the BPS worked closely with the HCPC to help them identify the SOPs.

Does a Masters need to be BPS accredited?
Does a Psychology Master’s Need to Be Accredited? You only need to take BPS accredited master’s if you do not have a BPS accredited undergraduate degree. If you are interested in psychology as a profession, you generally need a doctoral degree—either a PhD, PsyD or EdS—in the field. But a number of states do allow individuals to get a psychology license with a master’s degree. To practise as a counsellor employers will require you to have undertaken professional training and you’ll need a counselling qualification at foundation degree/diploma level to join a professional body or to become accredited. However, the BACP accreditation process is a very well thought out initiation into the higher echelons of counselling and psychotherapeutic practice. I highly recommend it as a process to fellow practitioners for fundamental personal and professional self-development. Studying an accredited degree often counts towards an additional professional qualification or registration with the professional body and students will normally study for the professional qualification alongside their degree.

What can I do with BPS accreditation?
Upon completion, you’d be permitted to register for Chartered Membership of the BPS and be authorised to use the title of Chartered Psychologist — a legally recognised qualification that reflects the highest standards of psychological knowledge and expertise. Unlike in many other countries, the title ‘psychologist’ is not protected within UK law. This means that anyone can call themselves a ‘psychologist’. However, the general public tends to assume a certain level of training and qualification from this term. Overseas psychologists from any country in the world can register with the HCPC in the UK and use the protected ‘practitioner psychologist’ titles such as clinical psychologist or counselling psychologist, thus qualifying them to practice in the UK. Is BPS a professional registration?
BPS as a registering body The society is an accredited register holder for the Wider Psychological Workforce Register, which is the only society register currently accredited with the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). If your course isn’t accredited by the BPS, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not a good educational programme. But it’s fair to say that courses that are BPS accredited have a reliable seal of approval that non-accredited programmes can’t necessarily claim.
