What causes dysfunctional thinking?
Research suggests that cognitive distortions may occur in numerous mental health conditions. These include depression, dysphoria, and anxiety disorders. A distorted thought or cognitive distortion — and there are many — is an exaggerated pattern of thought that’s not based on facts. It consequently leads you to view things more negatively than they really are. Dysfunctional attitudes are beliefs and attitudes that can lead to depression by causing negative thoughts about the self, others, and the future. Repeated patterns of unrealistic negative thinking are called cognitive distortions. Cognitive distortions are basically thinking mistakes. Learning how to recognize cognitive distortions can make it easier for kids to think more positively and feel better about themselves.
