The four levels of anxiety are mild anxiety, moderate anxiety, severe anxiety, and panic level anxiety, each of which is classified by the level of distress and impairment they cause. Normal levels of anxiety lie on one end of a spectrum and may present as low levels of fear or apprehension, mild sensations of muscle tightness and sweating, or doubts about your ability to complete a task. Importantly, symptoms of normal anxiety do not negatively interfere with daily functioning. There are several types of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, specific phobias, agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder and separation anxiety disorder. Anxiety may be caused by a mental condition, a physical condition, the effects of drugs, stressful life events, or a combination of these. The doctor’s initial task is to see if your anxiety is a symptom of another medical condition. Anxiety disorders are different from normal anxiety. Worry is a primary cognitive characteristic of anxiety, and has been described as ‘a chain of thoughts and images, negatively affect-laden and relatively uncontrollable’ (Borkovec, Robinson, Pruzinsky, & DePree, 1983, p. 10).

An example of a practical worry: I have several extra bills this month and I haven’t got enough money to pay them. This makes me anxious because I know that not paying my bills could have consequences. It can affect the cardiovascular, urinary, digestive, and respiratory systems, and it can increase the risk of infection. While many people know about the effects of anxiety on mental health, fewer people are aware of the physical side effects. Normal anxiety usually goes away once you’ve dealt with the cause. But people whose fears or worries intensify to the point that they are intrusive to their daily life may have an anxiety disorder, especially if they struggle to move forward because of it.
