How does culture relate to art?
In every culture in the world, artistic expression has emerged to provide an outlet for thoughts, feelings, traditions, and beliefs. Art can be both rooted in history and a catalyst for change in a culture. Many famous works of art are rooted in religion. Each culture has ideas and customs that they value. Artists are a product of the culture and society in which they grew; and as such, they are influenced by the customs and norms of their society. Often, their artwork reflects upon and upholds the objects, ideas, and customs that that society values. First, art is the barometer that measures levels of cultural sophistication. Throughout human existence, we have learned about cultural accomplishments from the cultural artifacts left behind. Many of these artifacts have left behind permanent marks on the planet. Arts and culture help tackle social injustice – theatres, museums, galleries and libraries are the beating heart of our towns and cities. Not only do they bring prosperity, they bring communities together and make life worth living.
Does art influence culture?
Art influences society by changing opinions, instilling values and translating experiences across space and time. Research has shown art affects the fundamental sense of self. Painting, sculpture, music, literature and the other arts are often considered to be the repository of a society’s collective memory. Art is a reflection of society and culture. It helps us understand what we are as human beings and influences how we relate to each other. Art is an expression of our inner thoughts, feelings, and experiences. It’s also an expression of creativity that can be used for self-reflection or social influence. Art can shed light on cultural influences from other places, historical events, cultural values, the persistence of certain traditions, and resistance and change to certain traditions. People use art to express their own individuality, but also to connect with others in the culture and express a shared identity. It reflects our ever changing culture and has the ability to alter society’s values. Moreover, art brings meaning into people’s lives and helps preserve the world’s culture and societies.It is a manifestation of society and a reflection of people’s intricate identities. Art can be a great way to express your thoughts, feelings, and identity in a way that can be universally understood. Art is a language available to those who can’t speak or write, and it can help us learn about ourselves as much as it helps us learn about others. Art is intended to be a form of appreciation of beauty and expression of emotional power. Culture serves as a guideline for behaviour, dress, language, and demeanour in a situation, which serves as a template for expectations in a social group.
Does art represent culture?
Art is the physical representation of a cultures views, beliefs and practices. It reflects the essences of the people through their drawing, painting, carving, body adornment and folklore (Ember and Ember 2011). It can be used to communicate ideas and thoughts; it can be used as a tool for self-expression, used as a form of therapy, or even as a means to find beauty in life. Art also captures a moment in time, historical events, social ideas and concepts, and political or social commentary. One way the many unique aspects of various cultures can be shown is through artistic expression. Art is a universal language; it can bridge divides within a community. Art acts as a vessel to share stories, bring awareness and celebrate all cultures. Cultural arts, such as music, art, drama, creative writing, photography and dance, are tools that help develop the mind and body, refine feelings, and thoughts and reflect and represent our customs and values as a society. Cultural arts help to explain the world in which we live through an exploration of creativity. All true art is literally a mirror of the artist’s mind, a reflection of the artist’s imagination at work. If you know that, and bear it in mind when looking at artworks, your eyes will be alert for the visual details that convey it. Besides the similarities when it comes to style, art students share common beliefs, dreams, inspirations and most importantly they are “enjoying a consciousness of ‘otherness’ or difference,” an integral element of a subculture according to sociologist Sarah Thorton.
Is art independent of culture?

What is the role of art in our cultural identity?
Art [including craft and design] is a kind of thinking/making which enables people to form and develop their identity. It is a self-affirming activity which helps us to interpret, think about, add to or challenge our cultural life. Art and culture is the identity of a nation, which helps us to better understand the world around us. As it brings people together, it offers us the opportunity to learn from each other and understand how there is unity even in diversity. Artists provide creative, intellectual and emotional insights into society at large, impacting the masses and challenging the status quo. Art helps cultures unite and boosts economic growth—helping the world become a prettier, better and happier place to live in. Art does not show people what to do, yet engaging with a good work of art can connect you to your senses, body, and mind. It can make the world felt. And this felt feeling may spur thinking, engagement, and even action. As an artist I have travelled to many countries around the world over the past 20 years. The functions of art normally fall into three categories: physical, social, and personal. These categories can and often do overlap in any given piece of art. Art is whatever a society or a culture determines is art. Every culture, both past and present, has a word that corresponds to ours for art.
What is an example of art within a culture?
Art and cultural expressions can for example be in the form of theatre, literature, painting, sculpture, poetry, music, dance, architecture, story telling, spirituality and rituals. Art is believed to help children and young adults build confidence, encourages empathy and acceptance of differences, allows opportunity for free expression, encourages creativity, and builds problem-solving skills. Art gives us meaning and helps us understand our world. Scientific studies have proven that art appreciation improves our quality of life and makes us feel good. When we create art, we elevate our mood, we improve our ability to problem solve, and open our minds to new ideas. There are five key ways that arts and culture can boost local economies: attracting visitors; creating jobs and developing skills; attracting and retaining businesses revitalising places; and developing talent.
Is art universal or cultural?
The answer to that question is simple. Art is Universal. It’s not localized and it isn’t exclusive to any particular culture, region or country. This means that each culture can benefit from having their culture represented in their art and that every person can have access to authentic art. Art and culture at their very core serve as some of the most significant, dynamic, participation, and social influences of human behavior and interaction. When put together, they have the ability to generate empathy, stir up dialogue, induce reflection and charter new relationships and ideas. Art Can Be Used as a Form of Communication It can be used to communicate messages, tell stories, and convey ideas. Art is important because it is a form of communication. It can be used to express ourselves when words are not enough. It can be used to communicate our experiences, thoughts, and emotions to others. 1) Art can broaden your perspective. When you’re able to think creatively it can open you up to finding new solutions you otherwise wouldn’t have thought of. “It’s like looking at an image upside down, to see it for what it is and not just as the image your eye is “trained” to see.
