Can you be a counsellor without BACP?
Your course does not have to be BACP-accredited, but if it’s not you’ll need to take our Certificate of Proficiency before you can progress to become a registered member or be eligible for our accreditation scheme. BACP accreditation is the mark of a high quality, professional practitioner training course. It guarantees a standard of training accepted for BACP membership, registration and accreditation. What is a BACP accredited counsellor?

Psych qualification and it is important to note that a B. Psych or its equivalent comprises both academic and professional training. Can I be a counsellor without a PHD?
There are no set entry requirements to become a counsellor, however you need to be aware that while an introductory course in counselling may have no academic entry requirements and a degree course will. Registered Counsellors usually see clients for between 8 to 10 sessions, and will refer to a psychologist where necessary, as they cannot diagnose or treat mental disorders. Registered Counsellors can work in private practice or under supervision. Starting salaries for counsellors can vary considerably but may be in the region of £20,000 to £26,000. Experienced counsellors can earn between £30,000 and £40,000. This two year part-time qualification gives learners the knowledge, skills and competencies to work as a therapeutic counsellor in an agency context in both health care and non-medical settings.
