Writing prompts are a suggestion to create a story about a specific subject—a way to start the creative process. Prompts can help direct your plot and characters because there are so many possibilities for stories, whether they come from your own life or your imagination. For students, what exactly is a quick write?
Described as a brief written response to a question or probe, a quick write asks students to quickly explain or comment on a given topic (green, smith, and brown, 2007; nunan, 2003). It is possible to use quick write at the start, middle, or end of the class (mason, benedek-wood). In a quick write to essay task, students are instructed to use their initial quick write of their initial comprehension to draft a longer related essay. The expectation is that students build on writing they have already begun; they do not enter the essay needing to generate fresh ideas or opinions.
