What is a SAM system account?
The System for Award Management (SAM) is a government-wide registry for vendors doing business with the Federal government, and SAM registration requires annual renewal. SAM centralizes information about grant recipients and also provides a central location for grant recipients to change organizational information. Do You Need to Register on SAM.gov? Any company that would like to do business with the federal government, or needs to report subcontract information, must register on the System for Award Management (SAM). SAM.gov registration is also a requirement for companies that want to obtain a GSA Schedule Contract. A SAM registration is required for any entity to bid on and get paid for federal contracts or to receive federal funds. These include for-profit businesses, nonprofits, government contractors, government subcontractors, state governments, and local municipalities. Registration in the SAM database means that the contractor has entered all the mandatory information, including the DUNS number into the SAM database, and the Government has validated all mandatory data fields and has marked the record as “Active”. Can anyone have a SAM.gov account?
In order to register with SAM (the System for Award Management), you first must have an active Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) and Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). If you do not have an active DUNS number, you may obtain one online at: http://fedgov.dnb.com/webform. Go to www.sam.gov. Enter your login credentials. Click on “Register/Update Entity.” Click on “Complete Registrations.” (Use “Incomplete Registrations” if your registration is incomplete.) You must begin with SAM Registration, the first step in the government contracting process, if you desire to apply for a Federal Grant or conduct business with the United States Federal Government. The SAM number actually is known as a Commercial and Government Entity (CAGE) Code. Once you’ve completed the SAM registration process, the government will provide you with a CAGE Code, which is a five-character identifier for your business. You can register to bid and apply for federal awards or you can request a Unique Entity ID only without having to complete a registration. If you want to apply for federal awards as a prime awardee, you need a registration. A registration allows you to bid on government contracts and apply for federal assistance.
