What is the process of attending?
Attending is the process of accurately identifying and interpreting particular sounds we hear as words. The sounds we hear have no meaning until we give them their meaning in context. Attending and listening are skills that are both interrelated – they complement and affect each other. By attending to a client, it enables you to actively listen to their verbal and non-verbal messages. Attending to the client communicates that you are ‘present’ and interested in what they have to say. Physical attending is a technical term that can be referred to as active or deep listening. The objective behind physical attending is to reduce communication barriers and elicit a productive conversation with friends, family, clients, and co-workers. Attending is the behavioural aspect of building rapport. When a counsellor first meets with a client, they must indicate to the client that they are interested in listening to them and helping them. Through attending, the counsellor is able to encourage the client to talk and open up about their issues. Positive attending behaviors usually open communication and encourage free expression. Negative attending behaviors tend to close down communication or inhibit expression.
