What is a behavioral problem in a child?
Children sometimes argue, are aggressive, or act angry or defiant around adults. A behavior disorder may be diagnosed when these disruptive behaviors are uncommon for the child’s age at the time, persist over time, or are severe. Some children have undetected medical issues such as allergies (food or otherwise) that can truly impact their behavior. Other children who are chronically defiant, constantly breaking rules or having trouble handling frustration may be experiencing ADHD, Asperger’s Disorder, anxiety or depression. While these problem behaviors can be difficult, tiring, and stressful, parents should keep in mind that with proper treatment and support, children often grow out of these disorders. Not doing their homework. Not listening to parents/peers and unwilling to cooperate. Throwing temper tantrums. Causing distress to their peers and bullying other kids. Signs of mental health problems in children include lasting sadness or worry, trouble sleeping or eating, and problems at school. If you’re worried about your child’s mental health, ask your child how they’re feeling and listen to them.
What is the most commonly diagnosed behavioral disorder of childhood?
ADHD, anxiety problems, behavior problems, and depression are the most commonly diagnosed mental disorders in children. Disruptive behavioural problems such as temper tantrums, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional, defiant or conduct disorders are the commonest behavioural problems in preschool and school age children. Significant tiredness, low energy or problems sleeping. Detachment from reality (delusions), paranoia or hallucinations. Inability to cope with daily problems or stress. Trouble understanding and relating to situations and to people. If you’re finding it hard to cope with the behaviour of your child, ask a GP to refer you to a specialist. The specialist will want to know what situations or people trigger the behaviour, what the early warning signs are, and what happens afterwards.
