A quickwrite is a first draft response to a short piece of writing, usually no more than one page of poetry or a short picture book, but differs from prompts and freewrites. Quickwrites allow us to write fast without censoring — it’s what the subconscious allows us to say. A Warm Write is what we call one of the writing/pre-writing assessments that we collect for our writing data trackers. A Warm Write means they are more supported test conditions, where as a Cold Write is a more formal test, similar to NAPLAN conditions. In general, warm writes are for pre-writers, or beginning writers.

The ‘cold write’ will give us baseline information about the children’s confidence and ability with the text type about to be taught. Completing these before the unit begins, allows each teacher to adapt the planning and resources to fit the children’s needs. Following this, most units will have a ‘Hook’.
