Margo Monteith, a professor at Purdue University, serves as its chief editor. It was started in 2010 and is published by SAGE Publications. While social psychologists examine individuals as members of social groups, personality psychologists examine people as unique individuals. Although there are branches of social and personality psychology that apply theories, research is their primary objective.It is the goal of both social psychology and personality psychology to comprehend the significant, important, and primarily social behaviors that people engage in on a daily basis. What does the study of social and personality psychology entail?
The study of social interaction and human groups, personality development and analysis, emotion experience and interpretation, and motivation all fall under the umbrella of social and personality psychology. From an individual, dyadic, and group perspective, social and personality psychology looks at how thoughts, emotions, beliefs, traits, and behavior interact. The research interests of the faculty in our department range from prejudice and discrimination to interpersonal relationships and wellbeing.Laboratory experiments on social behavior have traditionally made up a large portion of social psychology research, but this method has come under fire recently for being too artificial, unrealistic, and stifling. Research in social psychology draws heavily from other areas of psychology for its conceptual underpinnings.Social challenges like prejudice, implicit bias, bullying, criminal behavior, and substance abuse are studied by social psychologists along with interpersonal and group dynamics. They study how people interact with one another as well as the variables that affect that interaction, including leadership, attitudes, group dynamics, and group behavior.According to social psychologists, a person’s traits and the social context both influence their behavior. The social environment, rather than a person’s traits, frequently has a greater impact on behavior, according to this school of thought. Social psychology is primarily concerned with social context.
