Is shyness related to social anxiety?
Shyness and social anxiety disorder are two different things. Shyness is a personality trait. Many people who are shy do not have the negative emotions and feelings that accompany social anxiety disorder. They live a normal life, and do not view shyness as a negative trait. Social anxiety disorder is an intense, persistent fear of being watched and judged by others. This fear can affect work, school, and other daily activities. It can even make it hard to make and keep friends. The good news is social anxiety disorder is treatable. While experiencing social anxiety can be scary, the good news is that it’s treatable. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health, so be sure to talk to your healthcare provider about what you’re experiencing. The sooner you get help and treatment, the sooner you’ll feel better. Most people find that the more they practice socializing, the easier it gets. What causes extreme shyness?
What Causes Shyness? Shyness emerges from a few key characteristics: self-consciousness, negative self-preoccupation, low self-esteem and fear of judgment and rejection. Right from an early age, introverts have to compete very hard with peers, who seem to have no problem in public or interpersonal speaking. What seems to be effortless for peers is actually the most difficult task for an introverted child. Psychotherapy can help children cope with shyness. They can be taught social skills, how to be aware of their shyness, and ways to understand when their shyness is the result of irrational thinking. Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing can help children and adults cope with anxiety, which may underlie shyness.
Are you born with social anxiety?
We can say that no one is born with social anxiety. You may remember circumstances and events from very early in life, but there is no gene that codes for social anxiety, and there is not an immutable set of genes that cause social anxiety to occur. Verbal transmission of fear and threat from parents to children has been implicated in development of social anxiety. In addition, the severity of a child’s social anxiety can vary. Some children grow out of it as they develop, while others internalize the anxiety when they are older. Social anxiety disorder typically starts in childhood or adolescence. Among individuals who seek treatment as adults the median age of onset is in the early to mid-teens with most people having developed the condition before they reach their 20s.
What is the root cause of social anxiety?
Negative experiences. Children who experience teasing, bullying, rejection, ridicule or humiliation may be more prone to social anxiety disorder. In addition, other negative events in life, such as family conflict, trauma or abuse, may be associated with this disorder. For someone suffering with social anxiety, a forthcoming social event will present three different stages that the sufferer will experience psychologically – the anticipatory phase, exposure to the actual situation itself, and post-event processing. A 2014 study in The Journal of Child Development demonstrated that yelling produces results similar to physical punishment in children: increased levels of anxiety, stress and depression along with an increase in behavioral problems. While it may seem impossible to overcome a feared social situation, you can do it by taking it one small step at a time. The key is to start with a situation that you can handle and gradually work your way up to more challenging situations, building your confidence and coping skills as you move up the “anxiety ladder.”
