Of course it’s okay to be self-taught! After all, you don’t need to go to an art school or receive a fancy degree in order to make art and call yourself an artist. That being said, if you don’t have formal art education, you probably spend time searching for information on how to improve your skills. All this is not to say that one cannot paint without learning to draw; but the best approach to develop your skills as an artist is to learn to draw first and then build on your skills by learning how to paint. Many artists arrive in the world brimming with passion and natural creativity and become artists after trying other vocations. Some employers focus on your portfolio, which you build on your own or during a postsecondary degree program.

But the fact is that self-taught artists may be just as successful as those who have trained and some even more so. A self-taught artist is an artist who has not received any formal art education. Many of us may have artistic abilities and talent but without the means or encouragement to take it further. Yet learning to paint doesn’t need to be intimidating, and it doesn’t require talent, in-person lessons, or great expense. All you need to teach yourself to paint is a few materials, targeted practice, and the right frame of mind. Most people won’t give up a career to start painting on a whim, but the good news is that we are allowed to have multiple interests, multiple paths, passions and pursuits in this lifetime. It is never too late to start again with a new beginning or to reinvent yourself. Whether you’re eight years old or 80, it’s never too late to start making art. Give in to your passion, find the right inspiration and dive right in.
